The crossing to Vietnam was so simple,so that was a relief. We had taken an air conditioned coach and we plus 5 others were the only ones on it so that was even better. We quickly found a guesthouse and the nearest market and started to realise just how cheap everything is here, ive bought lots of xmas pressies and myself a fake Chloe Paddington that ive always wanted, so what that its fake, what is a girl to do! The traffic is crazy here, they all ride mopods and when u cross the road all u see is a sea of helmets, very scary, but a nice tourist policeman helped us across the first time. We decided to try the local vietnamese delicacy and headed straight towards KFC! We had been traumatised earlier in the day when Lianne had ordered chicken at a roadside stop off and got a chickens foot in it!! The next day we visited the Cu Chi tunnels that weere old hideouts during the vietnamese war, so many people died in them just trying to survive whether it was due to lack of oxygen or a snake finding its way in and biting them. We saw many traps that were used to try and kill US soldiers, they were brutal. all the spikes were made out of bombshells so extra strong. We also got to go into one of the tunnels ourselves that was 200m long, apparently made bigger than the real size for "westeners heineken bellys". The tunnels were so small and claustrophobic youwere bent double in the dark and the heat was immense. I then had the chance to shoot a real AK47, twice! The power was crazy, and the noise so loud! Afterwards we visited the war remnants museum where all the gruesome photographs from the war were displayed. Also photos of the effects the war is still having on people to this day. This was mostly due to the Chemical warfare used, in particular Agent orange, or leftover undetonated bombs that to this day are still maiming people. On our way to the museum we stopped a handicaps handicrafts workshop where only a few of the people affected by agent orange were skillfully working. In the evening we went to see a vietnamese water puppet show. It was nice to experience something a bit different and enjoy some cultural entertainment. Very clever and funny stuff, the vietnamese alternative to Punch and Judy. I lost my debit card yesterday as well (16/11/08) so another call to England was required, parents are a very useful tool to keep at home! Now ive just got to remeber my pin to my other card...bad times. Moving on tomorrow, even more inland to see the hill tribes where apparently its cold..like 22 degrees..good times. The humidity has been unbearable.
