Day 87 (Sunday 2nd March 08)
Up and ready for our bus to Phnom Penh at 9am. Ended up in a bit of a rush so managed to get some breakfast to take away and eat on the bus! Once on the bus we had to fill out the forms for entering Cambodia, pay for our visas and they took our passports. About a 3 hour bus journey to the border which was pretty straight forward as the 2 guys on the bus sorted all our visas and entries for us. It was a bit unnerving when we had to get off the bus and give in our passports to one of the officals then we all had to get back on the bus and we drove off! We were all left wandering what was going to happen about getting our passports back. Luckily someone on the bus said that we would stop somewhere for lunch and one of the guys would go back and collect the passports and give them to us. Thought we had a 20 minute wait but then one of the cambodian women seemed to be having an arugement with one of the men from the bus dealing with the passports. She then gave him some money and he disappeared off saying he would be about an hour. Who knows what it was all about but in about another hour we started off on our way. You can definitely tell the roads aren't as good here and had some very bumpy dirt tracks! Ended up arriving in Phnom Penh at about 4:15pm so we were glad to get off the bus after a long journey! Lots of Tuk Tuk drivers hanging around all wanting to take us off to the guesthouses. Went into the travel agent and asked about getting to a guesthouse. They seemed very keen to take us to one called Okay which was part of the travel agent. Decided we would take a look and see if there were any rats as it is mentioned in the Lonely Planet that you often share your room with them here. Em was not keen on that idea! Luckily after looking at the rooms they looked fine so paid our tuk tuk driver and checked in. Chilled out and sorted ourselves out and then had something to eat at the guesthouse as they had said you shouldn't be walking around past 9pm at night.
Day 88 (Monday 3rd March 08)
Got up early so we could get in some of the sites. Mark had a nice big English breakfast with some weird looking sausage. It was good though! Agreed on a price for a Tuk Tuk and went off to the Tuol Sleng Museum which was a grim eye opening experience. It's a shows a lot about the history of Cambodia and how the poor people had to cope with being imprisoned and methods of tortue used in the prison. Then tells of how they are transported to Cheoung Ek Killing Fields and promptly executed. Truly horrific and one which hopefully won't ever be repeated! Once we had finished looking around the museum we found our driver and headed onto the Cheoung Ek Killing Fields. When you enter you see the Bone mountain where the hundreds of skulls are housed to preserve the horrific past. You then walk around the mass graves which is another eeiry experience. We then headed onto the Russian Market which was ok but our bags are already to full to buy any more and much the same sort of handicrafts as Vietnam. Then back to the guesthouse and had some fruit. Then went to use the internet. Had something to eat back at the guesthouse again and played some cards
Day 89 (Tuesday 4th March 08)
Got up later today after our last couple of very early mornings. Had some lunch at the guesthouse and then walked along to the Royal Palace. Found out that it wasn't open until 2pm so carried on walking to the National Museum. Very interesting stone carvings. Then went back to the palace to go and have a look and found out that Em needed to have her shoulders covered so decided we would just go back and use the internet and yet again try to upload some photos and go around the palace when we are back from Siem Reap. Trying to upload photos again failed! Back to the guesthouse for some food and chatting to the guys as they are all very friendly.
