Emma & Fuzzy's Travels
Hi everyone! What a week we have had! After leaving Surfers we drove to Brisbane and found a nice campsite just 4kms from the city. We bought a nice big tent so we could spend leisurely evenings playing cards etc, but we are so knackered at night that we are in our sleeping bags by about 9pm! The tent is great though - I never thought I would be so excited about camping, but we both really love the freedom and pace of life. Brisbane was okay, nothing too exciting. It keeps amazing me how empty the streets are. We went wandering about on Sunday in the centre of a major city, and we could have counted the amount of people we came across. It's the same with vehicles, hardly any on the roads. It's really peaceful and slower compared to home. While we were in Brisbane there was a Scottish day going on, which was really quite bizarre. They had highland dancers, bagpipes, stalls selling tablet, kilts, celtic jewellery, clan maps and all sorts, but there was hardly a Scottish person on the stalls! I don't even think some of them had Scottish links, but they might have had a Scotty dog, or once owned a tartan scarf so came to soak up the 'tradition'! The highlight for us was when they had highland dancing to The Proclaimers!! Great craic!
We left Brisbane on Monday morning and headed to the farmstay. It took a couple of hours to get there, and neither of us were quite prepared for what met us. After almost blowing the engine up on the van getting up the dirt track hill that the farm is on, we were met by the most rural place we have been to. The nearest shop is 27km away, there is a neighbour a km or two away and the rest of the area is hills, trees, dirt tracks and fields. The owner was not there but there was 3 other help exchangers to meet us, 2 english guys and a german girl. The farm has cows, lots of goats, several horses, guinea pigs, chickens, cats and dogs. There are wallabies by the bucket load all around as well. The help ex explained to us that they had made us up a special place, as they had ran out of rooms, and invited us to have a look. We followed one of them (Jamie) and he took us up the dirt track, through the gate, into the field and up to the barn. Inside was our bed, complete with cobwebs hanging above it, a hook hanging from the ceiling a split stable door at the other side of the room and a massive gap between the wall and the roof!
