AFRICA!!
After a long flight I arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa at 5am. Nothing can prepare you for an 11 hour flight during the night!! I did not sleep a wink!! And despite the time difference I was suprisingly wide awake on arrival at my first hostel..
I decided that I would just power through the day and signed up for the afternoon tour of Soweto, a suburban township of Johannesburg filled with history of the freedom struggle. A great place, bustling full of community spirit and pride. The people of Soweto are some of the friendliest I have met anywhere in the world. They are very keen to ask you questions about where you are from, why you are visiting and what you think of them. The people in this area have made such a success of themselves and the community, they stood strong for what they believed in and fought for the peoples freedom. The fact that these people now own their houses was the biggest discussion point on the journey through the community, they now have running water supplied and electricity.. Shouldnt that have always been the case!?!
Johannesburg and South Africa gets a lot of bad press, some justifies and some not so. All major cities in the world have high crime rates and here is no different. However you certainly dont need to be afraid of leaving your accomodation to take a look around.
The hostel I was staying in was hilarious!! I was greeted by a young "Basil Fawlty" when I arrived, the best part was that Fawlty Towers was on in the tv lounge too!! I was the only person staying during this time, which was very strange!! But the staff members, especially Basil made sure I was having fun!!
From Johannesburg I headed for Durban...

Bobby hey dean, i just finished ur book and had to somoehw get onto you and let you know that the way youv thought about why you run kind of opened it up to me. Im 17 and had two of my friends murdered/killed in 2006 and the hurt was something i never could quite understand or wish to feel again. Since then i have trained and competed harder then i could have ever imagined and had no idea why or what for as i didnt care for winning but failure was never an option and i couldnt figure out where it all was coming from. Your book helped shed some light on the situation for me and to be at peace as i was worried maybe i just trained and competed out of grief but i realise it is for more now. Thanks,Cam
