Today was bittersweet. It was one of the best days I have had and learnt so much but also, heartbreaking. We started off at the killing fields, where thousands of people we're killed and buried when the Khmer Rouge regime took over the country. There were mass graves of hundreds of people and bones still coming up through the ground where you walked, also thousands of skulls which we're found. It was so sad and very upsetting. After this we then went to the German markets which weren't really much different to any other markets; sold the usual fake clothes and bags and also had a food part where people to go get fresh ingredients every morning for the resteraunts. Later we then went too the S-21 Genocide museum; it was a former high school turned security prison taken over by the Khmer Rouge regime. It is only 1 out of 150 execution centres in Cambodia. Inside the museum the cells are still in tact and so are the weapons used for torture. Each prisoner who entered was photographed and there photos we're around the museum, the faces are haunting and inside there eyes look dead. Prisoners were kept here until they were taken to the killing fields as after the first year the S21 plot ran out of burial spaces. Out of 17000 people who entered the S21 only 12 survived. We it to meet one of the men who did who showed us his cell, although he called it his 'bedroom' although he was smiling and telling his story his eyes looked glazed over and dead, like a zombie, no life in him. It was extremely sad and haunting. After that we then went to the national museum, not really my thing as it just was statues but it had beautiful gardens which I sat for a while by the pond and fed fish with some young monks. After we went to the Grand Palace and the Silver pagoda; the buildings and the temples are still breathtaking every time they have so much detail and are beautiful, the gardens here we're amazing too and everything looked so in place and perfect. Later we then went to the central market which was interesting, inside it had a load of jewerlry shops with hundreds of sparking gems, a bit scary though as all the guards had guns! After a long day we went back to the hostel had some good western food and slept for another 12 hours!
