Mudbath was great fun! Only it wasnt exactly a bath, it was more getting up close and personal to an indian woman with a bucket of mud, our skin feels lovely and soft though! In the evening we left the ashram and caught the overnight train to Goa. We were quite shocked when the train first pulled up with indian people crammed into every available space and hanging out the doors. We were in a sleeper carrige which wasnt so bad however as we walked on we were greeted by a smelly Indian mans feet in our face, lovely! The sleeper carriges were pretty dirty and there were bunk beds 3 high so you could just about lie down comfortably. We were on the train for 12 hours, it went suprisingly quickly, and we realised it was defintely worth it when we arrived in Goa. The differences are quite extreme, Goa is a lot greener than mumbai and all the fields are like bogs with lilies growing in th emiddle. The portuguese houses make the general appearance very colourful. The way of life is a lot more relaxed too, we really like being here. Our camp is also really nice, we are sharing a doorm with a irl from Holland and a girl from Germany, they have been here for 6 weeks already so have been telling us all the best things to do. Aparently the local markets are great with loads of indian jewlery and clothes and its all really cheap, can't wait to go!
When we first got to the camp we all had bindis put on us with red paint and rice to bring us good luck and two yellow flowers to welcome us. After and introduction we went to the annual carnival in Margao. It seemed like a pretty big event quite similar to England only in the scorching heat. Insted of just dancing to music, they also sing and play instruments. They also for some reason chuck talcum powder all over the crowd and throw indigo paint, water balloons are also popular but we managed to avoid these! We then hit the beach at Majorda which was AMAZING, literal paradise, just as the sun was setting too. We tried the local drink, Fenny, but it was a bit too strong for us! Back to camp for an evening of chatting under the stars and fairy lights with the others. Also had some interesting background music from a nearby wedding....they seem to love Black Eyed Peas!
Today we went to visit all the possible projects that we can volunteer at, there was a slum school, a day care centre, a goverment school... all different types, its going to be hard to choose which one to volunteer at but luckily we can volunteer at one project in the morning and then another in the afternoon. It was really nice meeting all the children who sang their 'abc' to us and were very friendly and lively!
