Ellen's Mini Adventure!
Hey all, sorry in the delay in this update, only things have been a little manic the past few weeks, however i am now settled in Sydney for the next few months, so can take a moment to update you on the past few weeks...........
When i left you last i was just about to go on the road trip with the girls down the Great Ocean Road..........well.......Neighbours night on the Monday (met Toady.....what a sweetie, and Boyd again, still as yummy!!) meant that we only had 2 hours sleep and were 'extremely' worse for wear come the Tuesday morning, however, we were up and eager (sort of!?!) and hit the road in our Nissan X-Trail rental by 11am!
The road that leads you out of the city was simple enough, and was our first chance at seeing Melbourne from a distance, its a beautiful skyline, and even with the weather a little cloudy we were all in the spirit of the 2 day road trip........ The Great Ocean Road begins in Torquay and is approximately 200km in length along the southern coast of Australia. Its a beautiful tourist attraction, but due to the time of year we are in we pretty much had the road to ourselves the whole time. Our first stop (and perhaps the most exciting part of my trip so far!!!!!) was a random, not very well signposted lighthouse. Eager and keen, we pulled over and had a brief walk to the actual lighthouse, and the more photos we were taking the more we were convinced that this was the lighthouse used in 'Round The Twist'.......remember it??........a childhood classic that we all grew up with on our TVs............anyway, a beautiful lighthouse all the same, and as we were about to leave two girls appeared and were humming the theme tune....'have you ever, ever felt like this, strange things happen, are you going round the twist........dum de de dum dum......' instantly, Moody does some investigating, and there, on a large plaque on the side of the lighthouse it clearly states 'Split Point Lighthouse, as seen in the television series Round The Twist'........well....to say we were chuffed was an understatement........a tourist secret that we discovered...........absolutely brilliant!
We were convinced now that nothing could top that, until we were driving along the coastal winding roads and there, in the sea, right next to us, following us along the coast was a HUGE wild whale...........absolutely stunning sight, this time of year is when the females come to the shore to have baby whales, so we must have had a glimpse of a female, and boy was she beautiful.
We continued on, our destination being Port Campbell where we planned to stop for the night before travelling some more tomorrow. The views are just stunning as you drive along, and even though the weather wasn't fantastic we were not short of things to look at and we stopped to paddle in the blimin FREEZING sea, had to be done, even though my toes were definitely on the brink of falling off! We arrived at Port Campbell at a reasonable hour and booked ourselves into the hostel, but they didn't have enough room for all 4 of us so we were upgraded to our own cabin- it was great, and we were able to shower and refresh before our early start on Wednesday!
And what an early start it was, we were up at 5AM......!?!.....we wanted to see the sunrise over the 12 Apostles, an elaborate rock formation in the sea, however, being the British tourists that we are........ we were unaware that sunrise is actually 2 hours after we had thought it was, so we were sat in the car, in the pitch black, in our duvets....waiting....and waiting......and waiting.......until finally it got light and we head down to the sea front, on perhaps the cloudiest morning in Australia ever, and saw very little!!! ha ha- typical! Still, was an eery sight, as the clouds cleared and the sun came out and the rain poured, and there we are in our pyjamas and duvets watching it all from the sidelines......was impressive even if the weather was not on our side!
The remaining sights along the road included the Grotto, the Arch and London Bridge, all various rock formations and all as impressive as the next, and then the journey back, and the weather today was a little better so we saw some more, and head to Triplet Falls, and did a 2.4km walk through the rain forest to find these three glorious waterfalls, a beautiful sight hidden deep in acres and acres of woodland, beautiful.
The drive back was relatively quick and we stopped for fish and chips on the beach, yet again showing our British tourist ways, and made it back to Melbourne by dark, where we settled in yet another upgraded room at The Nunnery, a beautiful old town house hostel, where we were put in the Guest House, was an amazing hostel.
Our final days in Melbourne were spent celebrating Vixs birthday and then we head back to pick up Bruce (who is still not 100% but he got us to Orange.....just about!) and said our farewells to the Moody clan before arriving back in Sydney early on Tuesday.................by now the nerves had well and truly kicked in for Sue and I as we were climbing the bridge at 3pm for my birthday.....................and i swear to god that bridge was bigger than when i last saw it.............
3pm arrived, and the girls walked us up to the start of the climb.....arrggghhhhh....we were breathalysed, signed our lives away, fitted in our very attractive boiler suits and given an hour of safety talk and climbed a simulator bridge with all our equipment before we were allowed up it.............
And..........wow...........was the most memorable 3 and a half hours........fantastic, mind blowing views, and words can not explain how beautiful Sydney looks from the top of that bridge! The photos are great, and am sorting out scanning them onto a computer so i can send them onto you all, but a brilliant experience, and a brilliant birthday treat, even though its not until Friday, Bernie, my climb leader, and my group all sang 'happy birthday' to me from the top of the bridge just as the sun was setting.......not every year that happens!
So.....i waved the girls off at the airport this morning, after a great last night out on Tuesday.......Scruffy Murphy's and local penthouses and hotels were not quite prepared for us that night eh girls!?!........and now I'm sad they are gone, but have had the most fantastic 5 weeks with them......ever.......so thank you again Moods and Sue! All that is left for Vix and I now is to find jobs, earn some well needed pennies, find somewhere to live and get a bit more settled for the coming months, apart from the 22nd of September when Mummy Moriarty boards a plane from Heathrow to visit her favourite daughter......woo wooooo...........
Hope your all well, will let you know when someone employs me........
Take care, speak to you soon, love me xxx
