Back in Kampot and loving it. I am in a guest house with a pool and have met an English man (works in PP) and a German woman (travelling alone) so have people to eat dinner with.
Yesterday I hired a scooter called Bert and went to the salt fields - they were amazing. For the first time I saw them being worked. Luckily I got up early and was out there by 8am and then spent over an hour going down every path that I was happy to go down. I saw preparation - lots of people, pulling the salt into piles (women) and putting it into baskets (men). I was sweating buckets just watching.
Bert then got lost taking me to the secret lake but I put him right and we arrived there safe and sound. It was almost as good as I remembered- last time it was like a mirror this time there was a breeze so the reflections were not quite as good.
I came back through the salt fields and they were deserted, so I reason they also get up early to do the work when it is “cooler” - had lunch and a swim.
In the afternoon I went to Fish Island and looked at more salt fields (there were some workers but not as many as I saw in the morning), mangroves and looked for the beach (yet again I did not find it). Followed by a foot massage - ahhhhhhhhh.
I then went to watch the sunset over the salt fields. I arrived to find it was the place where young men and young women went for that romantic action of showing off just how fast they can go on their motorbikes. I thought to myself - go watch the sunset over the river because this lot would still be racing up and down this stretch after dark and Bert was afraid he couldn’t keep up!!
Sunset was disappointing, so glad that I hadn’t stayed out at the salt fields and come back after dark. A G&T on the river front was far more satisfying.
Dinner with Olli, Nick has gone back to PP.
Today we have just explored Kampot and enjoyed another massage.
