Emma- The Globetrotting Girlie- Australia
The last two nights were spent in the highlands. This was our last real slice of Fijian culture we would ever see. (for now anyway!) We stayed with a family right on the top of a hill in a small bure (traditional Fijian hut, pronounced BUR-AY) see pics in my photo section. Sarah and I were the only guests at Nambululevu so it was very intimate and personal.
We ate with them every mealtime and as their English wasn't brilliant, our conversation was reduced to BULA (hi/ hello), VINAKA (thank you), VINAKA VAKA LEVU (thank you very much) and KAVA which is the traditional drink they have every night. Oh and VINAKA NA CACANA (which means thank you for the food!)
On the last night we had a Kava session with them. Kava is drunk by tradition and every Fijian is brought up drinking it. Many of the older men drink it every night. Kava is made from the ground root of the Kava plant and mixed with water. The batch these guys made was STRONG. So strong that we fell asleep in the bure whilst the Fijian boys (EUROLICIOUS!!!!) were playing guitars and singing tradional Fijian songs. We woke up an hour (or thats what I thought) later and we could hardly walk we were that spaced out!
I tried some of the Fijian tobacco that they grow and that too was strong. They roll it very thinly, like the thiness of spaghetti and use newspaper to roll it in! Marijuana is illagal in Fiji but all the locals have it. When we went horse riding in the highlands we met some local village lads who had a plantation and we also met the local dealer and his not so humble abode!!!!
