Yesterday, we went to the chaotic festival of Saint Fermin! As soon as we walked into the bus station, you could tell that today was a bit different than the usual day! We were surrounded by people wearing white pants and shirts as well as red scarves tied around their necks and waists. This outfit, as we learned was to represent the blood of Saint Fermin and the white represents the sky or heavens. After a 1 hour bus ride we arrived at our destination: Pamplona. After exiting the station we noticed that there was bottles of alcohol and litter strewn across a green. We made our way to a small plaza and stopped at a small but crowded cafe to eat breakfast. Our shoes stuck to the floor due to alcohol spilled on the floor from the night before. Then we headed towards the Bull Ring to watch the runners and the bulls enter. It cost us 6€ per ticket. As soon as we got our seats, the entertainment began, starting with three different dance groups and then a band. We were in our seats by 6:45 AM and the entire stadium quickly filled before 7:30 AM. The crowd sang songs, cheered on couples caught on the kiss cam. It felt like we were at a American baseball game! After all the entertainment was complete. The countdown began and we could watch on the large video screens the bulls and the mainly presumably drunk young men run through the corralled off narrow streets. The run only lasted a short three minutes, and soon men came pouring into the stadium, as well as a stampede of bulls! After the run we left to go explore the town. We then decided to check out the cathedral of Saint Fermin. Not realizing that a mass was going on, we found ourselves attending the mass standing in a side aisle. After that we stood on the side of the road to wait for the parade which contained instrumental ensembles, faith groups, and giant puppets! Then we went to a restaurant to enjoy some French fries and paella! Then we checked out several more plazas and ended up at another cafe looking at yet another beautiful view of the city! Around that time everyone started to get tired so we decided to take the bus back home. We got back to San Sebastián by 5pm and crashed!
