Today we have had a day exploring Fraser Island which is made 98% of sand! The aboriginal name for the island translates as 'paradise' which is a pretty accurate description. The island is only accessible by 4 wheel drive. A short drive along 75 mile drive took us to morning tea! All very civilised. Pretty surreal driving along the beach, officially the stretch is known as a highway so all the usual rules apply. After a drive though rainforest, passing a 40m high tree that was 800 years old we arrived at Lake Mackenzie. It looked like it had come straight from the cover of a holiday brochure. The water was crystal clear and the sand there is known for its exfoliating powers so of course I created a sand mask for my face. After a walk through some more rainforest we came to the Maheno shipwreck. In 1932 the propellers snapped off an old passenger liner and after a couple of days of drifting it ended up here on the beach. It was recognised as a tourist attraction and so has been left as it was, now just a shell of a ship half buried in the sand. The last stop of the day was at Eli creek, where enough fresh water flows out to fill an Olympic size swimming pool every 28 minutes. We are currently on the way home somewhere along 75 mile beach. We have seen 3 wild dingos roaming around, fortunately from the safety of our giant 4x4!
