I got up this morning to take some pics of the Plaza without the markets and guess what? They were setting up for a new market today. The place is so famous they have a market everyday, although some smaller than others. Everyday they set up markets under plastic and every night they come down. The bus ride to Urubamba was fun as always. I love local Busses. Instead of the stinky kid next to me I got stinky old street bum this morning. Pisac and Urubamba are both in the Rio Urubamba valley, so to get from one to the other you drive up through the river valley. The scenery is amazing, with mountains and rock canyons rising above you. Urubamba is quite spread out and there is not a lot here but it is OK to get out and look around. The scenery here is not as good as Pisac. We had overnight rain again last night. Peru is great it only ever rains at night. Being up in the mountains I for so long I have developed a dry cough. In Nepal they call it Khumbu cough. It is just from the dry mountain air and will clear up in a few days when I get lower. I also have cracked lips and it is just ruining my skin. This arvo I took a side trip to Moray and Salineras to check out some ruins and salt mine. I took a cab after bartering him down to 50s, and we went up into the mountains. First stop was Moras, just a little town in the middle of nowhere. Then Moray, the site of Inca terraces. Not any old terraces these are circular and stepped down into a valley. As with most things to do with the Incas they dont know what they are for but assume it was experimental. They think each circle has its own microclimate so the incas used them to find the optimal growing conditions for crops. If you look close in the photo´s you can see the true Inca steps. Salineras is the site of a salt mine. There is a spring here and the water is laden with mineral salts. they have channeled it into hundreds of clay pans and evaporate the water off then collect the salt which is used for cattle licks. Tomorrow Im on the local bus again to Ollantaytambo and I might stay a coupla days before Machu Picchu. Just gotta sit and work out tonight where I wanna be for the next few days before the jungle. I have to be in Cusco on the 5th for flight early on the 6th.
