dzasta travels
The hostel I am in is as quiet as. There only about 3 rooms occupied so it is great. Before breakfast this morning I went for a walk to get my bearings. I couldnt find anything where it was supposed to be. I latter worked out I had the map upside down. After breaky I walked to the Plaza de Armas. The road from my hostel to the plaza is a main road and there are heaps of travel agents along there. I used the opportunity to check out prices for a trip to the jungle. Manu is out of the question cos it is just too expensive at $150 per day. I booked two tours from Puerto Maldonado. One to Tambopata lodge and one the other way to Ecoamazonia then fly direct to Lima for my flight home. I also have a couple of days at P.M. to check the place out. I had to go to the bank to get the money out and that was a mission. The ATM would only give $200us maximum, if I could get it to work, and I needed more. I had to go to the counter and find someone who spoke english. She told me I could not get US$ with mastercard only visa. I had to go back and see if I could pay in soles. Back to the bank and the transaction went through and she said how would you like that in soles or US$. UNBELIEVABLE Problem is the transaction is done in soles, mastercard will convert to $US then bankwest will convert to $Aus so I get stung twice. I went back to look at what I thought was the Plaza and couldnt work out why nothing else was in the right place. It turns out I was at Qorikancha and the cathederal next to it. They are huge and when I went in I wasnt about to pay for an expensive guide, I did the old backpacker trick and latched on to another tour in front of me. Just pretend to be lookin at the same pace. Problem is it was Japanese!! so I ditched them and found another one German this time!! I guess so of these cathederals and the old paintings might mean something to me if I was catholic. I saw the oldest painting in Peru today in one of the churches but they wont let you take pics of them and you cant even sneak one cos there are people every where watching. Cusco IS a tourist town. There are markets everywhere, and they are huge. Anything you want from Peru is available in Cusco and they are prepared to barter. The markets take up a whole block, and there are heaps of them. The smaller places are hostels or hotels and anything smaller is a restaurant. There are 4 kinds of building in Cusco, in order of size, they are markets, cathederals, hotels and restaurant. This arvo I went for another walk and finally fount the Plaza. I´ve got a handle on this place now.The Plaza is surrounded by restaurants and they know how to charge. I had lomosaltada the otherday in Arequipa for 3.50 here it is 40s. Still Im gonna splash out tonight before I go back to the hostel and have dinner here so I can get some pics of the Plaza at night. Im having cuy. I´ll send pics tomorrow. I walked around the area for a while and was offered a ¨massage¨ on Procuradores st. I politely refused. It was an easy walk from there to the Church of San Pedro. Past Plaza la Merced and through the Arch of Santa Clara. This place is chock full of old churches and convents. I think they were trying to buy there way to the afterlife. On the same corner in front of the huge market was a guy taking the **** out of people. If someone walked past he would follow them, or walk funny or walk around them. He had a huge crowd and they were loving it. Some stilt walkers and jugglers showed up as well so something must have been going to happen. Im in Cusco for a coupla days then tour through the sacred valley, if I can work out the busses, working my way up to Machu picchu I think on Wed or Thurs. I think today is Friday.
