I thought Tetouan was a challenge but this it the steepest town I can remember being in. I can't describe how steep it is. Motor bikes have to change down a gear to get up some hills. When I got here I was going to use a taxi but there were none around so I started to walk. I soon regretted that and stopped to wait for a taxi. They were all taken by the time they got to me. I kept walking. I think I was about half way to the hotel I was looking for and I was knackered! I saw a few hotels and a couple looked above my price range but one looked OK. I went in and it is spot on. Looked at the room and that is also spot on. It is an old riad and the place is beautiful, comfortable bed, my own bathroom. Only problem no wifi. It is the cheapest room I have had in Morocco and second best, no wifi brings it down. This arvo I had a massive walk and then went home for a shower and cold water. The place is going down the list rapidly.
So I checked out the Kasbah and the Medina and generally had a look around. The place is post card material everywhere, if you can get a photo. Often you can't get far enough away to get a decent photo. After a nana nap I went for another epic walk. To the Spanish mosque and the Ras Le-Maa water falls. The Spanish mosque is at the top of a hill near town. Up hill is hard enough ( the sign at the bottom said 609ft to 1790ft) but coming down is just as hard on my old knees and ankles. I was so stuffed when I got to the top I got a couple of photos of town and forgot to get photos of the mosque. You will have to make do with a long shot.
So I came back down and then went to the Ras el-Maa riverside walk. Guess what that was down hill as well. At the bottom the falls were overgrown and you couldn't see anything. Then guess what? I gotta walk UPHILL to get back to my hotel! I thought I was starting to get to know my way around but I keep taking wrong turns and it usually means uphill or down hill to get where I should have been.
I meant to put at the start: Chefchaouen, chaouen means peaks so the name means look at peaks. Kasbah is usually walled and is fort often administrative area. Medina is old city usually Arab.
Tomorrow I am on the bus to Fez. The CTM (first class) is full so I am on Abdou bus, should be fine.
