dzasta travels
I'm back in Delhi, my least favourite place of all, and the place I have to spend the most time. I walked around near the Ghats, they have them here as well, and found the place where Indira Gandhi and her two sons were cremated. Nehru was cremated near here as well and for a bunch of big shots I thought the place was not given the respect I expected. Just near there is the old walls to the city of Shahjahanabad... Thats right the bloke who built Agra. I told you he was well before his time. India should give him a knighthood or better yet a sainthood. They are making billions from this visionary. I had to take an auto to Qutb Minar. It is a long way. I dont know why the place exists or anything else about it all I knew was it was here. It was built in the 1200's and is a very impressive place. It deserved more time and pics but my memory card was full so I had to get some downloaded to fit more on. After the download was off to Lotus Temple. This is a Bahai temple some have compared it to the Sydney Opera House, which you can see when you look at it but still different. After the sightseeing I got the auto driver to drop me off at Connaught Place. This is supposed to be the shopping mecca for Delhi. It is where all the major stores are, the brand names, and thats not for me so I headed up Janpath to the Tibetan market. I made a few friends and a few enemies but bartered hard for what I bought. I'm in a shopping frenzy before I come home cos I dont have to carry it any more. The markets have everything you could want and anything they dont have there is always the emporium next door, their touts will escort you. Today is the start of Holi, a hugh Hindu celebration. They end up throwing coloured dye at each other and run amock so I'm trying to keep a low profile and keep out of that. Thankfully I leave tomorrow on my way home. The reason I dont like Delhi is because it is full of Indians. There I've said it. They are rude, lying, cheats. Let me give you some examples. Horn tooting happens all over Asia and is a fact of life but not here in India. Here it is more personal. It is a full on blast to say "I'm more important than you so get out of my way" The really important people have a distinctive style of toot. You know toot, toot, toooooooooot or something similar just so you know they are really important and you can get out of the way quicker. Now the really, really important ones they just toot all the way so everyone knows to get out of the way quick smart. They just dont care about anyone else. If you are turning left you dont have to look to see if anything is coming cos they will watch out for you cos you are soooo important. Driving down the road and want to ****, no problem. Just stop, dont worry about getting off the road anywhere will do, and get out and have a ****. The other traffic wont mind. Spitting. Everyone spits, men, women and children. That is fine by me if they think they have to but they spit indiscriminately. I, myself have had to jump out of the way of an indiscriminate loogie on a few occasions and sometimes its not that easy when you are surrounded by cows and their ****. Trying to get off a train is chaos. They dont wait for you to get off they start pushing to get on. I have developed a habbit of pushing just that little bit harder to get off so they get out of my way now. Queue's are for the white boys, Im Indian so I go straight to the front. This happens a lot at the train stations but I have developed a system to spread my elbows and block them. The other day at Amritsar I grabed one by the throat and warned him, he didnt try again while I was there. They're cheats. If they get something of yours then you pay. I had some washing done here in Delhi and before he took it I said "how much" he said "35rp". We agreed so he took it. when he came back he said "84rp" I said no "35rp" we went back and forward for a while then he said "when you got 84rp you can have your laundry" we negotiated down to 50rp but it is the principal. In Darjeeling tha taxi wanted 200rp extra, when I told him where to go he slamed the boot. 200rp or no luggage. If its for something you want to buy give the right money or they will renegotiate before you get change. I'm getting good at snatching back my money and walk off. Rickshaws want to renegotiate half way into the trip. "There is lot of traffic" "you have bag" etc. I just get out and walk off. Lying.... they ALL lie. You know when an Indian is lying cos his lips are moving. The country has been great, and I have met some great people, but everyone of them lied to me in some way. Its been the best holiday, I gotta say backpacking is hard work, but Im ready to come home now cos Ive had enough of Delhi. Im still not quite ready for work yet but ready to come home
