dzasta travels
I arrived late into Delhi cos the train was late. The day before the trains were about 10 hr late cos of fog. I was only about 2 hr late. Luckily the hotel I booked is 24 hr cos a lot are not but when I got to my hotel they said the price was 495 rp not the 300 advertised on the net and confirmed in my email.I told them where to stick the booking and all of next week as well and set off looking for a hotel and it was just past midnite. After a few hastles with touts I found one that was suitable at 350 with TV. The next day I checked out a few more and found a better hotel so I moved. In the hustle and bustle of looking for a hotel my backpack broke and clothes went everywhere. What a pain. I was up early so I walked to Jama Masjid, the biggest Mosque in India. The courtyard is big enough for 25,000 people to pray. It was a long walk but I was on a mission to get a gift for a friend in Aus. After I had a marathon effort putting up pics on here for the impatient ones. Danny and Ngaere. The puters here are soooo slow and tend to crash when u push send so an hours typing is lost. They try to charge for it so now if it happens I just get up and leave without paying and go somewhere else. I went shopping for another bag and bought some T shirts. These ******* have a lot to learn about bartering. The guy wanted 650 I said 500, he said no. I said 500 he said 600, I said no 500 you know the drill, any way he wouldnt come to my price so I went to walk away and he said OK 450. What a dill he had me at 500. This morning I walked to the Red Fort. Forgot to check my book and it was the wrong day. The place is closed one day a week.......today. Still I went to another couple of sights while I was there. A Jain temple and Chandi Chowk. I know you thought I went to Chandi Chowk in Kolkata. I did. Most big cities have a Chandi Chowk. A chowk is a market or bazar and Chandi means central. I was a bit early for chandi chowk so I will go there again when I come back to Delhi next week. After I had my afternoon nana nap (the first since I left Aus) I went on a marathon walk again. This time I went south to India Gate, a war memorial they say has 90,000 names of the war dead engraved on it. Google it if you want to see it lit up cos I was there in daylight and wasn't going to wait til dark. There was a big park around the gate and people everywhere. From India gate I could see an interesting looking building so decided to walk there. It turned out to be Parliament house and they were in session. I couldnt get too close cos there were cops and army everywhere. There were also more satelite trucks than you could poke a stick at. It seemed odd in a country we think of as poor but every state has their own TV station and I think I have about 48 to choose from in my hotel. On the way back I found Jantar Mantar but I thought it was a bit ho hum so I didnt take any pics. I was stuffed so I caught an auto back but still had to walk all the way up Main bazar cos I had to buy some tape to fix my backpack. I have booked a ticket to *********** the overnight bus tomorrow. Leave here at 9pm arrive there at 6am, that should be fun. Will stay one night then bus (1hr) to Rishikesh for two nights. I will stay at Bhandari Swiss cottage in Rishikesh cos their Yak cheeese and brown bread sandwitches sound too good mmmmmmm cant wait for them. Plan is to then get to Amritsar for one or two nights so I can go to the border closing ceremony then overnight train back to Delhi to start my way home. I'll try to let you know by email where I am.
