The dirt roads here are soooo rough.
Fitretu picked me up at 6 to go to the bus station. The station is the same as any bus station, full of pick pockets and dodge people, all trying it on with some scam. Only thing this one is in Africa so it is supersize. The bus was pretty stinky and I really think some of these people need to get a bit closer to the soap. We are heading for Jinka and stop for breakfast in Kongo. The locals were eating big chunks of raw meat and chugging beer for breakfast. I had omelette.
Keyafer has a big Bana tribe market on today and an animal market as well. We were late but it was still on and was great to see the different tribes in traditional dress. Fitretu set up at a hotel and got a mate to show me around. The young guy was great fun and explained a lot in his limited english. At one point I had to use the toilet and it was the second worst one I have ever used, I can't even begin to describe the smell.
Later the young guy and me jumped on a motor bike and went for a blat to a nearby village. Not a tourist village but a real one. There are about 6 families living about 200mtr apart and they all help and support each other. Two young boys were so proud to show me their house, it is just a bark humpy, with no furniture and a ratty old cow hide they roll out to sleep on. His sister made us tea out of coffee husks that tasted like swamp water complete with dirt and bark floating in it. Another family insisted I try their home brew beer. I can't even describe the taste it was Not beer. I had to go again so they don't have toilet here just go anywhere. I walked out into the field and did my thing and then had to use leaves cos I was out of paper.
The trip to Jinkabwas in the stinkyiest bus with goats strapped to th roof, cos they couldn't get anymore in the back of the bus. They stopped crying when we got on the open road.
I'm staying a Nardos pension in Jinka and will be here again tomorrow night.
