Left Adelaide at ridiculous O clock in the morning in a tiny minibus. Drove the Stuart Highway and stopped at the Flinders Ranges to see a Salt Lake on the way, very surreal, it looked like snow! Had lunch at Spuds roadhouse in Pimba, then walked on the dry salt lake nearby - it wasn't until we were back on the bus that the dude told us about the unexploded hydrogen bombs under there!!
Arrived at Coober Pedy just as the sun was setting and checked into our underground hostel, its so strange. Its dug into the rock like a huge room with curtains seperating some sections to make bedrooms. Then we went across the road to eat at Johns Pizza house, just outside some dude had managed to get run over even though I'm sure only 10 cars must through here in one day!
The next day we woke up nice and early and finally showered to wash all that outback dust off. Had a tour around the Umoona Opal Mine Museum and hit the road heading for alice springs. Stopped at Marla for some lunch and then went to see one of the only remaining Aboriginal Communities called Iwantja. They are completely cut off from everything and you aren't allowed in unless you have a permit. Anyone that stays overnight and isn't welcome will either get stoned or speared. so we drove in. you aren't allowed to take pics inside, and i can see why....its filthy. There are derelict cars everywhere and litter strewn about the place. We went to the art centre to see some locals painting but they were all dead quiet.
Then 90kms south of alice springs we stopped at 'jims place' to see Dinky the singing dingo. He didnt sing for us though, booo. Finally arrived at Alice Springs and checked into Annies hostel and went to Melankas for tea and free beer!!
