Well hello from holiday land
The drive into Kakadu seemed to go on forever passing through lush then dry scrubby bush with amazing rock formations. After about 220kms we arrived at the eastern most town of Jabiru and after a drive around the town which is nice but small we settled into the Kakadu motor camp.
Many people had warned us that we would be eaten alive by the mozzies but we found that was not a problem at all having put plenty of spray on,we did however see people who obviously did not heed the warnings and had been eaten alive.
Kakadu National Park is a huge place and not wanting to take our van on the rough corrugated red dusty side roads that lead to most of the attractions we decided to treat ourselves to a 1hr flight in a plane so booked a flight for the morning. What a awesome flight it turned out to be as we flew over the huge Ranger open cast uranium mine then out over Arnheim land seeing amazing rock gorges then followed the East Aligator river as far north where we could see the sea in the distance . The circle back covered huge open swamp areas while we listened to a very informative history of the area. You can not comprehend the size of the park until seen from the air and we both came away buzzing after this once in a lifetime experience. I sat in the front seat with the pilot with Stephanie and another girl in the back and it was great to see a few croc's in the very remote areas where few people have traveled.
In the afternoon we drove out to Cahills Crossing where croc's congregate by the ford at high tide to catch fish. People were fishing just metres away from waiting croc's !!! Its a popular spot to watch them and we saw about 6 swimming about which really made the 80km return trip worth while. We then drove to Cooinda where our next instalment will be from.
