Hi Again Having breakfast outside at 8-30am in a pleasant 21 deg is a very nice way to start your day indeed driving on up the highway now seems a normal thing to be doing by 10am viewing more for those very long and dry landscapes. One thing that has amazed us is the termite mounds made of red dirt and in sizes from 30 cm to over 2 metres tall . They are there beside the road and back as far as you can see . In some places where they are plentiful , maybe 2 -3 metres apart you could count hundreds of them without moving. I knocked the top off one ( they are very Hard ) and saw lots of white termites crawling out of the honey combed Interior . Some people have dressed them up with tee shirts and hats with stubbies hanging out of their heads. Quiet funny, one even had a fishing rod, and it all helps to pass the miles away along with the eagles feasting on fresh road kills.
WELL IF THE GOUVERNEURS WERE LOOKING FOR WARM WEATHER THEY FOUND IT. !!!!!!!!
The day just seemed to get hotter and hotter under clear blue skies with little wind so driving with the window down enjoying the warm breeze was becoming unbearable.
When we pulled into the famous Daly Waters Pub and camping ground the temp in the van was 35 deg and about 32 outside in the shade. After a quick cold beer and a talk to a local who told us it gets a lot worse in Darwin, and that if we have not booked we will not get into any camping grounds as the v8 super car races are on .Steph had a minor melt down !
Much reassurance was needed and after a very lucky phone call to a camp 26 k/m from Darwin ( even to us now that is just up the road ) we were able to book a powered site ( much needed air con ! ) for 6 days. A nice quiet sit in the shade under our awning and things seem to look a lot better even though it was still €#%{¥<%# hot !
Steph had a shower and was sweating again when she came back to the van but we headed over to the pub at 6 pm which had live entertainment under a huge outside bbq area . The meal of their famous Barramundi and steak was the best we had had so far which topped off a very enjoyable evening. The pub is a really amazing place with anything and everything hanging up inside. An hour sitting under the stars in the dark allowed the temp to drop enough to go to bed and amazingly a good nights sleep was had by all in 24 deg. It's only going to get more humid from here on and it's their winter so I hope we can cope !!!
Welcome to the Northern Territories !
