This morning we stopped at the Ellery Creek Big Hole, another day and another Gorge....you could say we've gorged ourselves on Gorges ( stu, you can use that). Now back to being serious, it was another beautiful spot, with a great swimming hole.
We said goodbye to Michelle and Adrian and headed for the Devils Marbles. The drive was mostly uneventful. we had lunch at Tea Tree. Most of the towns between Alice and Katherine are small Aboriginal communities. We met some interesting characters and some really great people. We went through Wycliffe Well which claims to be the site of a UFO siting....very funny. It's run by an Indian family and is full of tacky UFO paraphernalia . I did hope there wouldn't be a repeat UFO performance because our camp was just up the road....we arrived at the Devils marbles that afternoon. It really does look like some giants played marbles and forgot to take them home. It is a really large area of rocks, but outside of that area the landscape is flat which makes it really stand out. We had been warned not to camp in certain places but this spot was very safe because there were about 20 other vans and campers stopped for the night. The camping fee is $7.70 for a family...how great is that. The thing that has surprised me on this trip is people travel with whatever they've got. Some people stop every night and put up tents, others drive around in a bus. It's amazing to see how other families are travelling. Hats off to the guy on the motorbike that sleeps in his swag every night, that's not for me :)
