We headed for Katherine today...we were up and out of the camp ground early for the 8 hour drive. There really isn't anywhere to safely stay between the Devils Marbles and Katherine so we had to make the big drive. The landscape was quite green and bushy. The most interesting thing were the termite mounds. There are thousands of them along this drive. Other tourists have taken to dressing the mounds in all sorts of clothes. It provides a bit of entertainment for the otherwise boring drive.
We arrived at Katherine Gorge national park late that afternoon. It's amazing how little things make me so happy now. The first thing was the free washing machine...I loaded two up straight away. I did buy a manual washing machine with all intentions of doing the washing myself....that has not happened :) the second surprise was the resort style pool with a bistro attached. So basically I didn't have to wash and I didn't have to cook. I was the happiest woman on the planet :)))
The next morning we got up for another swim and then headed for the gorge.
We hired some canoes and headed off to explore the two gorges. The water is apparently full of salt water crocodiles so we were on the look out to see one. Unfortunately we didn't get to see any...at the end of the first gorge you leave your canoe and walk 500m to the next gorge and collect a new canoe. At this stage we were so hot we had a swim....I really couldn't have cared if a croc bit my leg off at that stage it was so hot. The heat aside it was an amazing experience to enjoy both canyons from the water...another must do.
We got back from our river adventure late in the afternoon and left Katherine for Humpty Doo which will be our base for Darwin......
