We were picked up around 9.30 for our mystery tour. We quickly realised that we had booked a bus ride. There was no guide and no English to be heard. Heading out of Trabzon we were soon in the mountains, with some drizzle and mountain mist about. The first stop was a valley which on a clear day I'm sure would have been a stunning sight. Today however the mist was swirling through which gave it somewhat of an erie feel. With our next destination unknown we settled back and enjoyed the stunning mountain scenery. Windy mountain roads, deep valleys and towering peaks. Before long we arrived at Karaca Cave, situated high on mountain top. The views around us were stunning, as was the cave. Not huge in size but it certainly delivered on the visuals. Next was the Torul Glass Observation Lookout. After you don the protective shoe covers you are then permitted to walk out on a glass platform suspended from a cliff top, overlooking a small town. I'm really not sure why this location was chosen, or why it was even built, other than to prove that it could be done. For the whole day the weather was very changeable, moving from clear skies and sunshine to rain and mist. Hopefully we were heading to Sumela Monastery, which was our sole objective for the day. Unfortunately the weather gods were not on our side. When we arrived at the monastery carpark we were confronted by rain, clouds and thousands of other people. Chaos is the only word to describe it. We piled into a mini van with a dozen other people for the 2km drive from where you then walk the last 300 to 400 metres. We were hoping that the weather would clear. It didn't clear and a sign also told us that the monastery was closed for renovations!! Undeterred we decided to to walk up the path hoping we could at least catch a glimpse of this monastery that virtually hangs from the side of a cliff. No chance. Disappointing but nothing that could be done - the rest of the day had been very enjoyable. After dinner we had a final walk around the city square. We were amazed at the number of people who were gathered there. Family groups, skate boarders, buskers, an impromptu dance of about 50 locals was in progress, as well as the usual hawkers. The place had a definite vitality about it. Once again our expectations had been surpassed. Hopefully this will continue tomorrow when we leave the Black Sea and head south to Antalya, on the Mediterranean coast.
