9.00am and it was time to mount our trusty steeds and head off. Eight of us plus our guide JJ. A short cycle through city streets and we were on a dedicated bike path running alongside the Cheonggycheon Stream. Many years ago they built a freeway over the stream and finally someone realised what a waste that was. They tore down the freeway and returned the stream to its natural state. It runs for about 8kms through Seoul and is just a wonderful place to stroll and sit, watch fish in the stream, live musicians and even an outdoor library. The bike path infrastructure is incredible. Sealed pathways, lanes that run in both directions, and highly utilised by the local cycling fraternity. The stream finally joined the Han River and the cycle path than ran alongside the bank of the river. First coffee stop after 15kms and lunch was another 15kms further on. Apparently it's "flower season" so it was mandatory that we stopped for a photo. From what we could tell it simply looked like a few small fields of canola. But the locals were out in the hundreds, shuttle buses moving them from carparks, setting up sun shelters, wandering through the fields and generally enjoying themselves. To us it was a bit laughable. Coffee time here seems to come after lunch. So after filling ourselves on bowls of hot noodles, we stopped another 4km on for a 50 minute coffee break! The weather has been ideal. Sunshine and virtually no wind, making riding quite easy and enjoyable. We finally reached our destination of Namyangju, having ridden 59kms. Dinner was across the road in a very typical Korean restaurant. The amount of food they serve is incredible, and to some extent seems like a waste as we rarely make much of a dent in it. Tomorrow we head north east, with 69kms of riding in front of us.
