Our next destination was Kutaisi, enroute to Mestia in the north west. Whilst on paper it was possible to get from Telavi to Kutaisi in one day, it would involve 2 taxi rides, 2 marshrukty rides about 8 hours of travelling and for everything to go asolutely right. We weren't confident so opted to spend a night in Tbilisi and travel onto Kutaisi the following day. For the trip back toTbilisi we opted to take a shared taxi. This is basically a car that leaves when it is full. We negotiated our ride but then ad to wait about 50 minutes before the driver could round up 2 more passengers. The upside was that where the marshrutky took abut 3 hours we we back in Tbilisi in a little under 2. And this gave us another afternoon to have a look around this amazing city. The primary "target" was the Tsminda Sameba Cathedral. This huge cathedral towers over the city and with its gold dome and cross can be seen any time of the day or night. It is a modern day cathedral having been consecrated in 2004. From here we headed towards the river and came across 2 pedestrian underpasses that were filled with incredible street art. The creativity and skill of these artists never ceases to amaze me. A final few beers from our favourite terrace bar, overlooking the bustling square and our time here was rapidly coming to an end. Tbilisi is an incredibly interesting place, but one which I'm sure i have barely scratched the surface. Bustling, historical, new, laid back, it is a wonderful mix of all these elements. It has certainly made it onto my list of world's favourite cities.
