This morning woke up really early because the sun came up at like 5! Was so cool waking up on the beach though. Got up around 7 or 8 and had breakfast - lots of people had eggs and stuff but I wasn't fussed on figuring out the cooking etc haha so I just had a cheese sandwich, which was pretty good! Was really not in the mood to bother with my Swedish as much as possible any more. After a nice chilled out breakfast on the beach we packed up all the food but left the tents for the next night, and we were off again! The tide was really far in so we had to drive on the really dry sand which was really bumpy. The young german girl was driving too, which made for a fairly stressful journey haha, she was really not a great driver, and that was probably the hardest drive of the trip!
My hangover was definitely catching up with me by the time we got to our first stop - Eli Creek (or hangover creek!). It was a freshwater stream that came from inside the island and flows out to the sea. It was so cool! Absolutely freezing but instantly cured the hangover haha, and it was really good fun! You walk up to the top and can just lie on your back and you float down the river…seriously awesome! There was a big bit at the end of it on the beach almost like a big pool where we chilled out for a while. We found a tiny wee frog which was really cool, and after a lot of freaking out and Leonie chasing me around with it for the bit I finally got up the guts to hold it haha - serious personal achievement! After a while we got back in the cars to head up to a shipwreck along the coast.
I can't remember the name of the shipwreck but it was pretty cool. It's totally in bits because even after it crashed there the army used it as a target to train pilots to drop bombs…apparently they weren't very accurate and bombs were found all over the island afterwards! It was around here that I remembered Zak hadn't had many photos in a while and started putting him everywhere for photo ops haha - as well as all of us taking loads of photos together!
From the shipwreck we went to have lunch at another rest stop type place with picnic benches and a shop. I was so sick of my group by now haha, took myself off to wash all the plates etc for everyone just so I didn't have to sit with them…on the way back over to them, Mick - one of the guides - gave me half a box of chips that he wasn't eating because I'd been talking about wanting some earlier! Was majorly happy haha…especially because there was hardly any meat left for lunch that day so our group just had salad wraps basically lol. I offered my chips around, ate a bit of a salad wrap and then left them to it…had just got to the point where I wasn't even trying with my group anymore!
Had a look in the shop but it was mega expensive so just left it. Soon it was time to pack up the car and head to the next stop!
We headed up off the beach to see the champagne pools next! It was this journey when my iPod died...not fun. I gave one last attempt at conversation with the Swedish and then gave up, wasn't really worth the effort!
We arrived at the end of the beach and parked the cars, then climbed over a bit of a hill to reach the champagne pools! They are basically two big natural swimming pools, where the water comes in from the sea over rocks. They are called champagne pools because of the way the water bubbles over the rocks...not because there is any champagne there - unfortunately!
This was really cool, we had nice views from the walk over and it was nice to just chill in the pool for a bit and cool down! There were animals on the rocks - can't remember what they were called - that took on the water and then spat it out again like a fountain...very weird haha! We chatted to Gas, one of the leaders, about his pet snakes and stuff, which was pretty interesting!
After a bit we started to get a bit cold as it was quite windy, so went to try and dry off. At the point I got very enthusiastic trying to get cool photos of Zak, and after a while there were a few people even more into it than I was haha, trying to get a good shot! It was really fun!
Soon it was time to head back to the cars, where we chilled for a bit then started the journey back. On the way we stopped at Indian head, which is like a big cliff thing with awesome views. It was really cool to see the sand dunes behind the beach and stuff! We were trying to spot sharks and turtles and stuff in the water, we did see a huge turtle under the water but it was just like a shadow, I missed it actually surfacing! There was apparently a shark too but I couldn't see it either! The views were nice though, and it was cool to chill out for a bit!
We thought everyone was heading down to the beach again but when we got there we seemed to have lost a lot of people and they took ages to come down which was a bit annoying! I attempted to write a message in the sand and get some people to take a picture...we manged to get the attention of some of my Swedish who didn't have a clue what we were on about and didn't see the message so no picture for us...oh well! We were soon back in the cars for my last drive on the island - back to camp! We had managed to steal Gas' spare mp3 which was great, it had been a bit rubbish without music! We stopped quickly on the way at Eli Creek to wash the sand off us - closest thing to a shower we had access too!
By the time we got back to camp abd had started to figure out the cooking arrangements and stuff it was starting to get dark again. My group were seriously doing my head in. I attempted to be more helpful than the previous night but there were definitely too many cooks in the kitchen, and after they'd driven me mad all day and continued to refuse to speak Swedish I gave up and went to sit on the beach and avoid them! I did wash a few pots and stuff first bit that was about the height of my contribution. They must have hated me but oh well. Unfortunately useless German guy had soon followed me, and as he was almost more annoying than the Swedish I ended up going back to the kitchen bit and just chatting to the other groups while they cooked. Dinner took quite a long time but it was really nice! The swedes did a good job! Couldn't believe how much food we had cooked though, and there were no leftovers! Sian was pretty raging, her group had 5 nice girls and 4 antisocial Swedish guys - who had cooked their meal the second night. It was stirfry chicken with veg and rice, but they had just cooked the chicken without the sauce on, and cut up all the veg and left them raw - not cooked any of them! The girls were pretty unimpressed haha, especially as the guys took most of their chicken and ran! Ah politics!
After clearing up camp everyone headed down to the beach for a few drinks. It was pretty cool tonight because most of us sat together which was nice. Later on in the night we went to the next camp along and chilled out there for a bit with the other half of the group. It was a good night, although I did think I'd lost my camera at one point which was a bit scary! Slept in one of the cars that night - much more comfortable than a tent with no sleeping bag!
