Cape trib trip, night out with guns etc
Had a really good day today!! Did the jungle tour that I had won on the pub crawl in cairns.
Got up early to try and get breakfast before I got picked up...just about managed it but the staff seemed pretty disgruntled that they had had to get out of bed to provide the free breakfast we were meant to have...bit unimpressed with the overall customer service at that hostel!
I was the only person being picked up from Port Douglas, and they picked me up really early for some reason, so I ended up at the animal sanctuary about 40 minutes before the rest of the tour coming from Cairns...so I had more than enough time to see all the animals! Getting pretty used to kangaroos and koalas haha, the Cassowary was cool though, and the emus, as well as loads of birds. When the others arrived we had a presentation and I touched a snake and a baby crocodile (that had it's mouth SELLOTAPED shut!), which was pretty amazing, didn't think I'd ever have the courage for that! Was chatting to and english and american guy on the bus to the next place, which was a boat tour up the daintree river to look for crocodiles. They were really nice, the american guy was from San Francisco so got me quite excited about going there in the summer! Unfortunately we got on the boat (after a bit of a wait) and were told by the guide that we would be really lucky to see a crocodile because it was low tide AND breeding season...none of the tour operators mentioned that! So we didn't end up seeing any crocodiles which was a bit disappointing but it was still pretty class cruising up the river and seeing all the mangroves and bits of the daintree rainforest and stuff! We met the bus at the end, and went up to stop for lunch which, as usual for australian day tours, was pretty awesome! Got talking a little bit to two girls around my age...but they weren't particularly friendly haha. They were talking to a guy who was there with his mum who were a lot more friendly!
After lunch it started to pour with rain (standard...I really didn't research rainy seasons enough haha!) and we headed for our walk through the rainforest. It wasn't quite as wild as I expected...we had like a path to walk along, but that was good! We saw some really crazy looking bugs, and about halfway through it started to absolutely chuck it down...my umbrella didn't even really help matters! Was talking more to Guy and his mum who were really nice, he'd been in australia for about a year and she had come out to visit for christmas, so they were just travelling up the coast a bit before flying out - they were english but his mum lived in portugal and he was going to dubai to work for two years!
After the rainforest was meant to be "chilling on the beach at cape tribulation" time...with the heaviest rain I've ever seen! We got dropped at a bar and pointed in the direction of the beach...pretty much everyone opted to just get a drink but I figured I might as well go and see it because it's meant to be beautiful, and Guy and Lynne were going too so the three of us trekked through more rainforest to get to the beach. It was beautiful...defintiely would have been awesome in the sun but not quite the same when you are standing with an umbrella haha! Had good craic though.
On the bus journey back I was loving life with my iPod which I hadn't had much chance to listen to since I filled it in Perth! We stopped to take some pictures of another beach which was pretty cool, after asking to get a normal picture taken I ended up looking like an eejit and jumping to try and get a jumping photo because Guy refused to take it of just me standing still! It worked pretty well though haha. Chatted to Guy for a lot of the way back and then got dropped at my hostel for the night in Cairns - I had just booked into Nomads because it was down by the greyhound bus.
I went into the hostel and said hello to the all guy dorm I'd ended up in (after the guy at reception not being able to find my booking) and didn't get much response...don't know if they were all just bad at english or rude haha. So I ditched them and went out to get my free dinner that was included from the hostel, and texted Gunilla to see what she was up to. Turned out that her, Rachel and Yiannis were already at a bar with cheap corona, so I headed to meet them! Met a girl they were with called Katherine who's from lisburn and was really nice. We hung out there for a bit, me and guns went and had my free dinner (spag bol, was actually pretty good!) and went back to them, then we all went to the woolshed for free champagne hour and had a bit of a dance. Had a really good night, but was sad to say bye to those guys when I went home!
