Day 35. Departing Geraldton we have enjoyed our couple of days in this lovely city. Heading south down the Indian Ocean Drive we follow the coast and its many white sandhills, stopping in small fishing villages of Leeman, Jurien Bay and Cervantes. Then we head west again through some country back roads into the South Beekeepers Conservation Park and the Badgingarra National Park and photo many beautiful wildflowers. We suddenly come across 2 massive wind farms and 2 solar panel farms which supply electricity into the WA grid, most impressive. Passing through the small farming town of Dandaragan we see beautiful green wheat/sheep country and fields of yellow canola before stopping in small town of Moora to admire the old heritage hotel ‘The Drovers Inn’ built by Wilhelm Friedrich Gustave Lieberman in the 1880s. A walk through the fully restored bar and lounges we are greeted by a young barmaid from Toronto, Canada. But tonight we are staying somewhere special. Arriving into New Norcia we are staying in the monastery guesthouse with the Benedictine monks, the only monastery town in Australia. Founded in 1847 by Spanish monks this community comprises beautiful heritage buildings including a church, chapel, monastery, hotel, colleges, orphanage, farm, bakery, olive grove and winery. After dinner at the Hotel New Norcia we chat with Father Ogilvie who has been a monk since he was 18 years old and he must now be 85! He tells us to keep God close to us and he will look after us! The bell is ringing so we must now observe total silence between 8pm and 8am. Distance today 360km, hot 31 degrees.
