Sunday
Packed up and on the road by 9am. We take a quick detour to see Bell's milk bar. This is a 1950’s style diner but when we got there it didn't open till 10am. Didn't look much from the street so we'll need to check it out next time.
We head out to Menindee and arrive just after 11am. It's a nice little town - bigger than we expected. We called in to the information centre and the lady there was very helpful. She explained that there is no water in Menindee Lake at the moment but the other lakes are OK. We decided to have lunch at the pub and then continue up towards Wilcannia.
The Darling River Run is a 730 km drive that follows the Darling River from Walgett in north-western NSW to Wentworth on the Victorian border. The road is on both sides of the river so we decided to take the east side from Menindee to Wilcannia and then up to Tilpa (we've done Tilpa to Bourke on an earlier trip).
Just out of Menindee we took a small detour to have a look at the free camp at Main Weir. It was spectacular, right on the water with plenty of space.
The unsealed road is only open in dry weather so we were expecting it to be a bit rough and certainly quite corrugated but the drive up was quite good. There were lots of windflowers, emus, sheep and cattle. We've found a new campground thanks to WikiCamps that's just outside Wilcannia and arrive around 3pm.
The amenities block is exceptional with very spacious showers. It is still very new and the owners appear to be expanding. We've booked in for 2 nights but after talking will probably add another night so we can do a day trip to White Cliffs.
