Our first day in Norway we arrived from London to a wet Bergen, with no thanks to the bus driver who dropped us nowhere near our hotel. We saw the airport bus 50 metres from our hotel later after we soaked walking there. The Clarion Admiral was right on the edge of the fjord and close to the fish market, where you can have a fancy fish feast inside or go out to the rows of tents set up along the quay where they cook and you collect the seafood and sit at their tables. The display of fish and giant king crabs is amazing, as well they display examples of what you get on each dish. Norwegian kroner 180 which is about $A30 for calamari and chips is rather pricy, surprising considering the amount of fish available. Bergen is very pretty situated on the Byfjorden "the city fjord" it is surrounded by mountains with the rows of coloured buildings along the Bruyygen Hanseatic Wharf. Bergen is the second largest city in Norway and is a very busy cruise and freight port. The weather is mild but Bergen is known as a rainy city. Over our two days there we experienced this in between bursts of sunshine. Best to go prepared with layers and raincoats and umbrellas. The hotels are very well heated and you need to take off layers inside.
The Floibanen Furnicular goes up Fløyen Mountain for panoramic views and hiking trails, we enjoyed the trip up and had both sunshine and rain.
Bergenhaus fortress overlooks the port and has some historic buildings. Fires have destroyed many parts of the city as with other European cities. Norway was invaded by Germany in 1940 and they occupied much of the coastline up until 1945.
