Rothenberg surrounded by a city wall is very charming as was our guide Victoria. All the streets are cobblestones adding to the charm. One of the specialities of this Franconian town is snowballs sold in bakeries. Shaped like a snowball it is pastry twisted and then coated with chocolate or cinnamon and icing sugar. The chocolate one was good but cinnamon one was tasteless. A much tastier speciality of the area is the schnapps. Plum is 25% alcoholic content, pear 40% Victoria and the bus driver offered us a chance to purchase the schnapps as well as a beer, we all had to have a sample and purchase a few extras at only 1.5E as a result everyone disappeared after lunch for naps as we cruised on to Kitzingen. Our first night excursion was to the oldest wine cellar in Germany. Here we were offered a variety of Franconian wines by Thomas our host. He described the wines in a sing song English with a German accent that was straight out of Hogan's Heroes or 'Allo, Allo It made for a friendly evening with much laughter and wine.
