Just came back from 4 Day Safari with Viva Africa Tours, Jan 4-7, 2014. We visited Tarangire Park, a Masaii Village, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater Reserve. One sees these things on television or movies, but until you expereince it yourself, it's hard to explain. The numbers of animals, the wildness of it all and the way the Masaii people live. The village experience was outstanding.
The roads and the dust were brutal but to see lions sitting in a tree or eating their Water Buffalo kill makes one so aware of how and why the people or tribes did what they did for so long. It really is survival of the fittest and the anmimals abviously and the people here take that concept very seriously. We are the ones that cannot handle it. To see animlas such as ostrich, leopard, hippo's, rhino's, wildebeast, impala, water buffalo jackasl, hyena, zebra, antelopes, buzzards, elephants, warthogs. giraffes, baboons and other monkeys all live in one area, albeit very large, just randomly is so amazing.
Tanzania and Moshi where I spent a lot of time, is wonderful. The people are friendly, honest, funny and are really in a third world situation (reminds me of Mexico 25 years ago) trying to get into the second and first world. There is a lot of corruption still, SO many volunteers but not lots of business people from other countries. This surprises me because there are lots of opportunites. The weather and the sunrise/sunset is so predictable - it leads to a kind of peace of routine and familiararity which is a nice change. They lack good internet services and some tribes (there are 126 here) just don't believe in school so many children are not educated. of course there is the Aids problem and other issues but there also are a lot of young people trying to move their country in a modern direction. I just hope they don't lose their roots because some western influences (garbage, Coke, wasting water) are not that good. One can believe that this government for all its problems, has done a good job and it will only be better down the road!
I cannot wait for my Rwanda Gorilla trekking next - visiting the long lost cousins! What I will 'come to realize' next!

Debbie Leah - The pictures on your safari were amazing. How awesome to see many of those animals in their natural habitat and be so close to them. I guess there are no rhino or elephant crossing signs! Keep up the good work with your blog. I so enjoy reading your entries. Makes me wish I were there. Just to let you know it has been mild here the last couple of days and will be for the balance of the week - around 2. No tan for us though.
Amédée happy to hear some balanced perspectives. I know what you mean when you say "you need to see it in person," because I remember that about the sahara in Morocco. Pictures just don't do justice. The village experiences are always the best because you get to see how they actually live and create society. The people you meet in 3rd world countries are often some of the happiest and brightest, despite the corruption. However, I doubt there will be any businesses opening up shop soon. We will discuss when you get back. BE CAREFUL IN RWANDA, And dont stop with blog entries. love it !
Alfred Michael Thanks for everything Leah! Your best client we ever had before, we are really looking forward to see you here in Moshi with your family again, wish you all the best on your trip, we will miss you so much, "CREATING HAPPY EXPERIENCES "
