Met two girld on the bus from Palenque; Mona from Sweden and Rachel the kiwi. They offered me to share a room at a hostel they had got recommended...I took the offer and we walked to the hostel...The place was a bit dodgy but I thougt I'd stay one night at least... Went out for dinner and this was the first time since January I've been this cold! San Cristobal is up in the mountains and the bussride was horrible!
The day after we strolled around the town and sorted out some travelling-stuff. I liked the town. Loads of cafes, restaurants, churches, indigenous people and tourists! In the evening we met Roald, my flatmate from Leon. Went out for dinner and then we went to a pub where they played revolutionary music! We started to get the picture of what kind of hostel we were staying at...The people looked like tey had been travelling for a decade with their dreads, dirty clothes and weed! They were laying in a bed all day watching DVDs and smoking!
The secound day we went for a tour to an indigenous village. We visited a church where the floor was covered in pine needles and candles. The indigenous were practicing hat they called Traditional Catholism. They talked with the saints and offered them chicken and fizzy drinks like coca cola (a burp meant a sign from the spirits) Coca Cola was cheaper than water here and the only rich person in this village was the man who had franchise rights to Coca Cola! Went to drink some traditional alcohol and eat tortillas made of only corn (not mixed with flour). The mexican guide got so drunk... Strolled the streets in the afternoon because non of us wanted to go back to the hostel! Went for a fantastic dinner followed by a The Da Vinci Code at the biggest shoppingmall in town! Came back to the hostel where they were waiting for the daily delivery!
Tomorrow Rach and Mona will go to the Guatemalan highlands...I will return to Palenque and cross the border to Guatemala in the lowlands and head for Tikal! The mother of all Mayan ruins...
