After a very restful sleep, we had a lovely breakfast and visit with Valgeir and Þórhildur, Heather, Laura and Maggie. We headed up the fjord to Siglufjörður to see the herring museum and meet up with the family reunion group.
Siglufjörður - the most beautiful little fishing town on the northern point of the fjord. The road to this town is not suitable for anyone who is scared of heights (like me). It winds around on the side of cliffs - terrifying with a breathtaking view! There were also lots of tunnels - some of them one-way where you have to wait for oncoming traffic...or play Icelandic chicken! Siglufjörður is my favorite little town so far. Quaint little fishing village, that has an interesting Herring museum. There were people from the reunion here when we arrived, so we started introducing ourselves to anyone in a blue t-shirt.
The majority of vehicles in Iceland are standard transmission. We were walking on the sidewalk at the Herring museum, and we heard this strange noise...kind of like thunder - it was an SUV coming down the side of a hill!!! it hit a cement wall at the bottom - OMG! Every Icelander around ran to the scene! There was no one in the car thank goodness, so everyone (sans the SUV) was ok. The Lögreglan (Icelandic Police) arrived on the scene - probably the most action they have seen all year. Cop reminded me of Davis from Corner Gas.
Headed to Dalvik to the family reunion which was held at Hussabakki. So many people from Canada, US and Iceland. Had a great time meeting new people, and spending time with our family. The Icelandic families hosted a very nice supper where everyone sat with other families and got meet more new people from different sides of the family. Supper was lamb with potatoes and salad - delicious!! Then - the highlight of the night.....the Icelandic Sweater contest!! So cool...men and women paraded their sweaters before the judges to music and clapping. The rest of the night was spent taking family photos of each of the family groups, visiting and enjoying the event. I have to post more pictures of the family when I have time!
