It soon became apparent we are not a 'normal' tourist family in Camooweal. We were told of a new attraction - Drovers Camp which has only been open to the public for the past four months."800m east of town... yeah, the cemetery's just past that..." were the directions we were given at the Post Office "..it's really worth visiting" he added (referring to Drover's Camp).Being so close to town we headed off on our push bikes; Misty and Declan have ridden every day while the trailer is being set up but it was the first time all four of us rode together.Riding beside the highway, we frequently pulled off to allow caravans and other vehicles to pass. When we finally covered the 2km distance (hmmmm...) we were greeted by Pat, the volunteer guide, "Ah, We heard you were coming!". Drover's Camp is, as the name suggests, dedicated to preserving the essence of life as a drover.Misty and Declan had the chance to ride and wrestle the bull 'Murranji'.After Drover's Camp we continued out to the Camooweal cemetery.Being a child in the outback during the early 1900's was obviously a dangerous occupation; there were far too many graves containing young children. It's probably a good thing the chap in the post office hadn't calculated the distances for our trip because we estimated our ride covered about 10km.
Camooweal itself is located not far from the NT/QLD border. It's funny but we weren't quite so excited about the NSW/QLD border. After so much anticipation we stopped a short distance away to arrange the camera for a family shot of us crossing the border.Misty had other plans, as it turned out, making a mad dash and performing her very own border crossing dance!
