Driving along the Matilda Highway that would take us to Adels Grove (via the Burke and Wills Roadhouse and Gregory Downs) we came to a section of road that doubles as an emergency landing strip for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.Maybe we should have visited that museum....?or maybe we'll be lucky enough to find out more in some of the other places we visit.
If we thought Cloncurry was dusty we were perhaps, a little naive. There was dust of a different dimension in Adels Grove and it managed to find its way into every sealed section of our ute and trailer.
Before the sun had a chance to rise we were up and had climbed 'Island Stack' to watch the sun rise over Lawn Hill National Park's lower gorge - It was simply gorgeous....ha ha!After lunch we hired canoes and explored two sections of the gorge. There was a middle section where we had to lift our canoes out and carry them around waterfalls to be able to explore the next part of the gorge.
Crossing three rivers to reach the Riversleigh fossil fields was a little unnerving with the warning signs referring to 'strong currents' and 'slippery surfaces'.It was also a little unexpected after seeing so many dry riverbeds.Regardless we crossed and explored the fossil fields. It was fascinating to see fossils embedded in the rocks and understand that they had been there for millions of years.
Morning tea found us beside the road again, this time exploring a dry creek bed that was awash with 'thunder egg' type rocks.
