We woke to sunshine and at last have a chance to use our hosts bikes to explore the Bavarian countryside. First we had to de-cobweb them as they had been in the garage for more than a year. There were two new bikes and one old one. Luckily one of the new ones was my size but the other was too big for Chris' short legs so he had to take the old rusty one!
Despite this we oiled them up and spent the day biking in the glorious sunshine. Four weeks ago there was a monsoon that delivered a year's worth of rain in one go. This overwhelmed a small river and created a torrent that swept towards the main town and took out bridges and houses on its way through. Unfortunately people eating in the cellar of a restaurant in the local town were drowned as they were unable to escape in time. As we were biking around we could see the scar this flood left in its wake. What was amazing was that roads and bridges had nearly all been rebuilt so that people could use them again. We came across one bridge that had not yet been replaced and the stream was just trickle that we stepped over. It was hard to imagine it would create so much damage.
