Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Leaving Alexander Nevsky Cathedral I was to take the Metro back into the tourist centre. This line was interesting as unlike the more regal looking red line it had sliding steel bunker doors on the platforms.
Soviet planners during the Cold War designed Metro stations to withstand nuclear attack. Hence they are so deep with long escalators down and platforms are shielded by doors to protect from any bomb blasts.
Our Lady of Kazan Cathedral was easy to find as you left the Metro station back in the city centre. It was modelled on the Vatican and has the same open arched architecture
The interior had a long rectangular hall with many columns. It didn't have the painted murals of other Orthodox Churches.
Worshippers were also standing in line to kiss sacred items.
There had been light drizzle since I left the Metro so I was hoping it would pass and this wouldn't become a rainy day going forward.
