Adventures of a Global Wanderer
This morning I was going to head over the the Tatar Mosque which was a short walk from my hotel and on my route to the Peter and Paul Fortress. I've seen photos of it before and its a lessor known site despite its close proximity to major sites such as the Peter & Paul Fortress.
With so many domes in the city people probably think its another Orthodox Church and don't notice it. The Peter and Paul fortress didn't open till 10am and was just across the road so I had time to explore the Mosque beforehand.
I thought it would be locked this early. Also it appeared to be under restoration on the minarets. But then I noticed people going in as the entrance is round the side.
The inside was also under restoration for the main dome. A person asked me in French if the Mosque was used for prayers. I tried to respond in French as best I could that it would be later in the day. He was Algerian visiting from France.
It was interesting architecture and I would have liked to have returned during prayer time to see some of the local Muslims but I had a busy schedule of walking and didn't expect to come back this way again.
The Mosque was visible from my hotel, the Peter and Paul Fortress where I was going next, and other nearby landmarks.
