Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Every time I've visited Quebec I never went to the Citadel as its a trek out of the way to get there and I didnt want to pay the admission when I was on lower budgets. Now when I wanted to go yesterday all the museums were closed so I had to push it to today.
Today I would give it one last try. I named it the curse of the citadel. The snow was getting a bit messy to walk in but there were still tourist carriage rides taking place.
The Citadel is a long trek uphill into the fortification walls. Entrance was $16 but 20% off with my carnival pass. There is also a second museum of the Governor General's Residence but it is closed for the winter. The Curse of the Citadel I'd have to come back in the summer!
The museum was in a section of the fortification walls and had exhibits from the two world wars.
The Citadel which is still in military use was used by troops during both world wars, and even visited by wartime leaders.
There was then an impressive medal collection which I had no idea about and a change from the many military museums with the same types of exhibits of armaments and uniforms.
It was interesting seeing the different crown designs for various medals to commemorate service in different conflicts.
To get inside the Citadel itself you can only go by hourly guided tour. I opted to skip it as the wind was quite strong up here on the clifftop.
I then made my way back thru the Carnival grounds one last time before I left for home. It had picked up a bit today as the weather wasnt as severe as yesterday. I wanted to try the toboggan rides but the lines were still too slow even in small crowds.
I was trying to finish the museums and get to the observatory for a panorama view before it got dark. The Museum of the Plains of Abraham was $12 entry with $2 off with my Carnival pass.
The main feature of the museum is the third floor 3D movie theatre. Originally I was going to skip out for time but this is the main feature of the museum.
It tells the story of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham which took place over two summers in 1759 & 1760 with a winter interlude.
Natives fought with the French against the British. Rather then storm the city from sea the British scaled the cliffs at night upriver and came round to attack the city. The city was also pounded by canon fire from the sea.
The residents faced starvation but the British were ill prepared for the extreme winter when they took the city. The rest of the museum was quite simple with just uniform displays.
