Adventures of a Global Wanderer
One of the highlights of the winter carnival were the two weekend parades. This weekend while I was here it was in the northern suburb of Charlesbourg. Next weekend after I'm gone it will be downtown in the Old Town.
I'd been searching forever online for details on where the parade route would be so I could plan how to get there by bus. Eventually a week before the map finally popped up on the website. I posted the route maps at the end.
The Charlesbourg route was too far to walk and I had to get there by bus. The parade would head down Henri-Bourassa and 1e Ave so those roads would be closed to traffic. I planned on taking route 28 which would take me up 4e Ave parallel to 1e Ave.
Near the centre of the route was Galeries Charlesbourg an indoor shopping centre where I hoped to wait and get some food. When I got there the shops in the mall were already closed this early but the parking lot was full as locals had the same idea to hang out here midway.
All the street level businesses were closed to traffic so were making the most of the large crowds today. Even though it was -10 degrees weather, light snow, and an hour before the parade route it was already quite crowded and festive.
Many locals had these long horns which are part of the carnival tradition but quite annoying hearing them blowing all over the place. I scoured for food, Tim Hortons had lines just to get in, so I ended up at the gas station to get something.
It reminded me of the many parades in Korea standing and waiting for the parade to come by but nowhere near as cold. My other issue was finding the right camera setting for moving objects at night.
When the parade did come thru it was worth it despite the cold and waiting. It took about an hour to wind thru and was an assortment of creative floats, costumed characters, and anamatronic style reindeer. I think this route was better than next weekends downtown which will be more congested.
To return home there were massive crowds at the bus stop as we all tried to leave together. Luckily they had express shuttle buses lined up to clear the crowds.
I really liked it and either weekends parade would be a highlight for anyone planning to come to the carnival but have layers of clothing and warm boots.
