Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Today was going to be a trying day. It was imperative I leave the hotel by 6am to catch the 730am ferry back to Alor Setar. From there the 90 min bus back to Butterworth, then the ferry to Penang, and an hour long bus down to the Penang Airport for my 6pm flight to Indonesia(see map above in reverse)
Langkawi does not have direct flights to Medan Indonesia, only back to Penang or Kuala Lumpur. I couldnt fly or take a ferry to Penang as they do not co-incide with the Medan flight and I'd have to stay overnight again in Penang losing a day.
I managed to wake at 5am and luckily the hallway bathroom was free. However I went in time as after I was leaving people from the rooms who had their own bathrooms started going back to use the hallway bathroom
I left the hotel 6am and walked the 45 mins back to the port. The counter was already opened and I got a ticket for the first ferry back at 730am costing 23Rm ($8).
I had asked for a window but when we boarded mine was an window row aisle seat. Luckily the ferry was not full so I waited for everyone to board then moved to a window seat. I slept for a bit before we arrived at 9.15
Now I waited outside the Kuala Kedah port for a city bus to take me back to the Alor Setar terminal so I could get a bus to Butterworth. Buses were extremely slow again on the mainland and eventually one came at 9.40. I paid 2.20Rm (.70 cents) and it was the same conductor that had brought me from the bus terminal when I had first arrived at Alor Setar. With buses this slow in town it was a good job I wasnt stopping again for any sights in Alor Setar
When we arrived at the terminal they were boarding people for the 10.30 bus to Butterworth. There are two Butterworth buses, one that goes to Kuala Lumpur and will stop on the highway, or one that will go all the way in to the Penang ferry terminal. I wanted the Penang ferry bus and didnt have time to waste being dropped on the highway
Ticket was 10.80Rm ($3.60). I asked people on the bus and the ticket collector to make sure this was the one going to the jetty for Penang.
I slept more on the bus and we arrived by 12.10 at the port area. I walked across to the ferry and this time we had to pay 1.20Rm (.40 cents) whereas coming it was free.
The worst part of the logistics getting me back to Penang island was over. Now I only had one city bus to the airport. I was worried with the three day holiday everyone would be heading back and buses may be sold out but I had no problems
I had some time to kill in Penang before I had to goto the airport to check out some of the museums that were closed when I was here a couple of days back.
