Adventures of a Global Wanderer
I finally made it to the ferry terminal at 530 in time for the 6pm ferry and luckily there was still one more at 7pm so I hadnt missed getting there today. Ticket price was 23Rm ($8) and I asked for a window seat.
When I got on I looked everywhere for my seat and eventually found it a now with a pole blocking entrance to the seats. Fortunately there were two small girls sitting in the two seats beside who went off somewhere for the duration so I had the row to myself.
It was similar to the high speed ferry I had taken to Japan and we could not go on the outside deck. The windows had sticky film so werent too clear to see outside.
When we arrived it was already dark and it took me about 45 mins walking along the coastal road to find my hostel. It was mostly luxury hotels and no local stores. Also there are no buses so the only option is walk or taxi.
On arrival at the hotel he gave me this look I sometimes get at hotels that either they didnt get my reservation or that they are overbooked and dont have a room for me.
Even though I booked four months ago booking.com didnt send him the booking till a few hours ago he claims. My name stood out as it was the same as a family member so he knew I was coming. Lucky I hadnt arrived on the later ferry.
At first he was trying to give me a dorm room but I insisted that I booked a private room and that I never share in any of my reservations, showing him the printout that stated standard private room.
The owners were speaking Urdu, which is odd for Malaysia, so I just played dumb to see what they were saying, not realizing that I could understand everything when they were frantically trying to find a room for me.
His helper asked since they are giving me a room with two beds shouldnt they be charging me for two people but by this time they knew I could understand and I replied back in urdu, why?
He ended up giving me a bunk bed room, not what I had booked, but the room was to be private with no sharing, with fridge and tv. He said all the other rooms had their own bathrooms and that I would only be sharing the hallway bathroom with one other person.
Unfortunately due to the busy holiday lots of locals had crowded into their rooms so were using the hallway bathroom as an overflow so as not to steam up their own rooms, so I couldnt get in to use the bathroom.
I went to get some food instead and found in an Indian restaurant so ordered Mee Goreng for 3.20Rm ($1.05). When I came back the shower was still busy so I was going to goto bed but then I heard someone come out.
I had to clean the bathroom as lots of wrappings had been thrown on the floor and the shower drain was blocked with hair. As I tried to goto bed it was like being in a playground as the kids from the other rooms were sent out to play in the hallways outside my room.
