Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Having arrived in Alor Setar near the Thai border I wanted to spend some time exploring the towns sights before taking the ferry to Langkawi Island. I knew with the three day holiday the museums will probably be closed so I was debating whether to do half today and half when I take the ferry back, or even do a day trip back on the ferry when the museums are open.
I had to ask around at the bus terminal where to get a bus to take me to the city centre. I wanted to take one to the centre, see the sights, and get back on another bus to take me to the ferry port. This was a bit confusing for them to understand.
They told me to take the HBR local bus which was just a big old school bus. Fare was 1Rm (.35 cents) and I kept explaining to the conductor that I wanted to get off at the centre by the big tower, look around, and get back on another bus to the ferry port.
I could see the giant tower as we neared downtown but then he told me to get off at a central market and the tower wasnt visible anywhere. How could you lose the biggest landmark in the city. I tried walking around to see it on different streets but was lost so decided to ask someone.
A guy with a shaved head and small pony tail offered to walk with me a block or two till the tower was visible again. Now I knew where I was I followed my map to the nearby Thai Buddhist Temple.
The main hall was locked but I was able to walk around the grounds and see the other buildings. I was rushing as it was now after 4pm, the bus had taken almost an hour to come to the centre, and I still had to take the ferry to Langkawi Island so didnt want to miss the last ferry
Then I made my way to the tower. Despite being so big I couldnt find the street that would lead me to the entrance. Eventually I found my way
Entrance was 12Rm ($4). I didnt want to be spending money but since everything else was closed for the holiday I went up so that I was able to do something
I thought I would be able to see Langkawi or Penang Islands but they were too far away. I did see the Thai Temple I had visited along with the sights in the city centre such as the Zahir Mosque below.
I was also able to see the distant port from which to take the ferry to Langkawi.
