Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Jumping on the ferry from Market Square I was going to head to the island fortress. Ferry ticket was 2.50 Eu ($3) from a vending machine. Luckily I had Euro coins.
Heading out there are good views of the city landmarks. You also see the various ferry ships for this international harbour.
It was getting windy and gulls were following expecting snacks. I still had my luggage so I got some rest during the ferry instead of carrying my bag the whole time.
On arrival everyone rushed off so I was confused where I was supposed to go. Then I found a tourist map so got my bearings.
By the ferry was a collection of Russian traders wood homes. Further in the buildings were made of brick.
The island is still inhabited by a small number of residents. There are a couple of places for tourists to stay also on the island.
It would be a nice place to raise kids in a car free zone. The island is best appreciated by air or from the sea to see all the fortress walls
I was trying to get to the southern end which is the Kings Gate, a landing area for boats.
It was getting really windy in this open coastal area. The southern area was more of a fortified fortress.
There were also canons facing out to sea which had rotating tracks for angling their direction. I also stumbled across a shipyard on my way back to the ferry.
I hadn't eaten since my morning train ride in from St Petersburg. After taking the ferry back I went to one of the food stalls in Market Square for something filling. I got a grilled salmon with potatoes for 11 Euros ($14).
