It's fantastic being back at the beach!
Got to Broome and caught up with some friends we'd made in Darwin - Bree and Matt, from Geelong. As destiny would have it, we arrived just at the right time, as Bree and Matt's beloved Geelong Cats were playing in the AFL grand final 2 days after we arrived! We became temporary Cats supporters and cheered Geelong to victory at the local pub.
Our good timing also meant that we got to see the "staircase to the moon" - an event that happens only a couple of nights a month for 6 months of the year, where the moon rises over the sandflats of the bay. Judge for yourself from the photos if you think it looks like a staircase, either way though, it was a great thing to watch.
In between swims at the beach, and more swims at the beach, we also checked out the WW2 plane wrecks out in the bay which can only be seen on a negative tide (we are still baffled as to how the tide can be less than zero metres, but anyway...). Visiting these wrecks, which are old float planes bombed by the Japanese in 1942, involves walking on the sandflats about 1km out to sea. The sand is very fine, almost like mud, and very squelchy - got out there OK, but the sun set while we were on our way back in, which made for an interesting (and messy) journey back! Lea almost lost her shoes a few times, but refused to take them off, lest she trod on a crab or something else bitey.
Matt, Lisa and Torah have joined us here in Broome, and we are heading up to Cape Leveque with them, about 200km north of here. Can't wait, as the beaches are supposed to be great, and the fishing awesome!
