We've been having theme days the last few days, namely Waterfall Day, Lake Day, and Big Tree Day.
Upon leaving Innot, we spent the day checking out waterfalls in the area, and I tell you, we didn't even tick half of them off the list. Our favourite was Millaa Millaa, a massive drop into a pool that you could swim in. If you were crazy. The water was freezing, and you actually get a certificate if you dare take a dip.
The next day was Lake Day, where we visited a series of crater lakes which were crystal clear, surrounded by rainforest. Highlight of Lake Day was a visit to Lake Barrine. After a Devonshire tea at the teahouse, we did a cruise around the lake and checked out the rainforest close up - massive trees, massive tree ferns, and a massive diamantine python, which the guide almost parked right on top of in an effort to get a closer look.
We finished the day by setting up camp on the edge of another lake (this one man-made), a fantastic spot where you can launch your boat anywhere along the shore. Oh, if only we had a boat, Lee laments.
Big Tree Day involved a massive strangler fig, emphasis on massive, and some kick-butt kauri pines. They grow their trees big up here, alright. Lea salivates at the big slabs of timber they have on display to demonstrate the age of the trees still standing. Not that she'd want to cut any of the trees down, of course. Just to get that straight. We don't want any hate mail.
There are some award-winning restaurants in Yungaburra, and we got to sample one last night - Nick's, a Swiss-Italian restaurant complete with a yodelling chef. Lea sampled some traditional Swiss fare, while Lee decided on the crocodile dish. Hopefully he wasn't invoking bad crocodilian karma... Lea will have to be extra-vigilant when we get back in croc country, just to be on the safe side.
