Stayed in Weipa an extra day, fishing charter didn't pan out, but Lee had some more success with the queenies, and Lea had fun taking photos of kites (the bird kind). We also saw an eagle ray flying across the water, and a massive bull shark leaping clean out of the water. Quite a wildlife experience. Luckily no crocs, although one was spotted the previous day, right where we were fishing!
Headed off from Weipa, the Tip in our sights. Took a shortcut, which turned out to be a long-cut, as the road was pretty crook and slowed us right down. We developed a mysterious rattle which we thought was coming from inside the camper, so stopped countless times to readjust our load, to no avail. Lea found a solution though - she just turned up the music.
Pulled in for the night at Bramwell Station, the northernmost cattle station in Australia, and set up camp in a paddock. As we were checking in at the office/bar/restaurant, we were pleased to run into our new friend Chris, the crazy cyclist we'd met at Archer River. His 73 year old mate had to fly home a few days earlier as he'd picked up a virus, so Chris was now going it alone. Did we mention he was crazy?
Chris had busted a spoke on his back wheel a couple of days prior, and, not being too bike-savvy, asked Lee to help him fix it. To say the wheel was skewiff would be an understatement! Chris had had to disconnect the rear brake as it was rubbing on the tyre, and the wheel wasn't even round anymore. The Bush Bike Mechanics got to work, and Lee devised a temporary fix. By the time they'd finished the wheel was running pretty true, but Chris didn't worry about reconnecting the rear brake, as he said he'd gotten used to just using the front one. Danger, Will Robinson!
We cooked dinner back at our camper, and were joined for dinner by a rather skittish (and rather massive) Brahman bull. It was a working cattle station, after all...
Next morning, after an additional adjustment to Chris's spoke, we waved him off and hit the road ourselves, still plagued by the pesky new rattle in our camper. Music back on loud!
