Deb's Travels...
Captains Log. Star Date 02.07.05
I thought I heard on the weather yesterday that it had snowed at the Blue Mountains. I had been waiting for this to happen since I read that it sometimes does between June and August, so I took it as my cue to head on over and check them out.
Now, I'm not sure if I dreamed it or what, but there definatley was no snow to be seen anywhere. It did however, wait for me to step off the train to start raining!! (of course!)
Well, despite the lack of white cold stuff, I am really glad I made the trip out, the eucalyptus was in fine form doing its stuff to make the back drop appear a dark shade of blue. I have visited the Blue Mountains on a previous trip to Oz in 2000, but didn't really rate them , or find them to be all that blue to be honest. I'm not sure if it was the rain or what but they were most definatley lookng blue today!
I actually said "wow" out loud to myself when I saw them, they were awesome.
I went to a couple of lookout points, saw the three sisters, all the while admiring the 'blueness' around me, got rained upon some more whilst taking lots of piccies...then wandered down to the Katoomba cascades, which were really pretty and flowing fast (due to all the rain no doubt!) I was going to do the 45 minute walk down to the Katoomba falls, however, as you will already have read, it takes 45 minutes, and I was wet, and had already trudged through a fair amount of wet mud to get to the cascades, and walking down to them would innevitably mean walking back UP from them too. So I figured the cascades were pretty enough for me and took my cue to leave Katoomba and the rain.
One of the most amazing things I've seen was yet to happen... I was on the train as the sun was setting, and the line goes around the mountains. The colours in the sky were absolutley stunning, from yellows to oranges, pinks, reds and a purple shade. There were still lots of clouds in the sky from the rain earlier, and this just enhanced the colours. I sat looking out the window in quiet awe, admiring mother nature at her very best.
Its funny because its easy to take for granted where I am and the things around me, and then the sun goes and sets over the blue mountains and reminds me that I havent seen it all before at all!
Really good day, wet, but good! (will keep my ears and eyes out for news of snow and make a return trip should this happen!!)
Over and out xxx
