Today we drove from Winton where we stayed for 2 nights. Winton is best known for its Dinosaur museum due to the vast numbers of dinosaurs found on grazing properties in the region. Clancy was one very excited boy.
Winton itself is just a small, dry, hot, dusty inland Qld town and nothing to write home about. The Dinosaur experience though was amazing. The scenery is breathtaking and the tours and exhibits are great too.
Another surprise and delight of Winton is the Waltzing Matilda Centre. Winton is also famed for being the location that Banjo Patterson wrote Waltzing Matilda. There is a brand new museum and gallery dedicated to all Waltzing Matilda and the region in the time that it was written. An awesome projection gallery that we all enjoyed (Nene you would love it).
We are now in Mt Isa for a re-stock before doing some bush camping for a couple of days. Nobody told us Coles and Woolies don’t open on a Sunday though so not much of a restock being done tomorrow before we head off.....ooops.
We loved the scenery today from Cloncurry to Mt Isa, with lots of termite mound country that became a red rock outcrop and heavily treed mountain range. Mt Isa is just a regional town with a dirty big mine in the centre of it, yet with a pretty mountain range around it
So tomorrow we cross into the Northern Territory. We will head across to Three Ways and then down to the Devils Marbles and then on to Alice Springs. Unfortunately this trip we can’t fit in going north to Katherine, Kakadu and Darwin, so we will come back and do that another day.
